
The instructors at Fig Garden Yoga Studio have either received a minimum of 200 hours yoga teacher training through a formal program and are registered with Yoga Alliance, a national accreditation board that sets minimum standards for yoga teachers, or they were trained or certified by independent schools in their areas of specialization.
Nancy Tan, founder and co-director of the studio, holds an advanced teaching certification through Integrative Yoga Therapy, an approach that blends the ancient tradition of yoga with modern mind-body disciplines. She is a Registered Yoga Teacher (E-RYT 500 hours) with Yoga Alliance, and is a member of the International Association of Yoga Therapists (IAYT). She has studied with many master yoga teachers including Rodney Yee, Donna Farhi and Gary Kraftsow. In addition to yoga, Nancy studies Ayurvedic Health Education through the American Institute of Vedic Studies and is trained in Ayur-Yoga through the Ayurvedic Institute in Albuquerque. She teaches with love, humor and acceptance, emphasizing breath, alignment and body awareness. Nancy is also a licensed psychotherapist, with extensive training in humanistic, transpersonal, and mind-body integrated psychotherapies. Over the last 15 years, Nancy has led many workshops that blend her expertise in yoga and psychotherapy, ranging from Stress Reduction to Chakra Yoga. Her book, QUIET MIND, HEALTHY BODY: The Art of Low Stress Living, will be available Spring 2008.
Audrey Tan, co-director of the studio, is a certified Iyengar yoga teacher. She is a graduate of the Iyengar Yoga Institute of San Francisco, is registered on an advanced level (E-RYT 500 hours) through Yoga Alliance, and is a certified Yoga for Scoliosis teacher. Audrey completed the two-year teacher training program at IYISF while apprenticing with Elise Miller, a certified senior Iyengar teacher and back care specialist. To continue her yoga studies, Audrey spent the month of July 2007 in India, studying with the Iyengar family. True to the teachings of Iyengar Yoga, Audrey emphasizes correct alignment of the body in yoga postures to minimize the potential for injuries and to maximize optimal energy flow. She teaches an energetic and fun class, and excels in modifying poses so that they can be accessible to all levels of students. Audrey accepts private students who want to use yoga to improve their athletic performance, scoliosis, and a variety of other conditions.
Caroline Coons began Iyengar yoga while visiting India in 1996. She is currently completing her second year of teacher training at the Iyengar Yoga Institute of San Francisco, a premier training school for yoga teachers in the tradition of Mr. B.K.S. Iyengar. She apprentices with Janet MacLeod, a certified senior Iyengar teacher who has been teaching and practicing for 20 years. In addition to teaching yoga, Caroline has been a volunteer at the California Vipassana Meditation Center in North Fork for the past few years. Caroline accepts private students for yoga and can be reached through the studio. Caroline will be on sabbatical January-March 2008 and will return in April.
Jim Guy is a certified Iyengar yoga teacher who has been practicing Iyengar yoga since 1995 and teaching since 1999. His primary teachers are Kristin Chirhart and Lee Sverkerson in Minneapolis, MN, both certified senior Iyengar teachers. Jim has studied with the Iyengar family in Pune, India, as well as with Dr. Geeta S. Iyengar during her visits to the U.S. Jim served as a board member for the 2004 Iyengar convention in St. Paul, MN, and we welcome him to Fresno.
Elizabeth Karsh is an experienced yoga and meditation practitioner, and is currently participating in the Fig Garden Yoga Studio Teacher Training/In-Depth Studies program. She oversees the Wednesday evening meditation sitting group. Elizabeth teaches reading intervention for Fresno Unified and she also offers consultations in Vastu Shastra, the science of interior design that applies the principles of energy to create harmony and balance in personal and work environments.
Libbi
Mariani-Pitalo is a
certified yoga teacher through Integrative Yoga Therapy, an internationally
known yoga teachers training program, and a registered teacher with Yoga
Alliance (RYT 200 hours). Libbi has studied with many master yoga teachers
and incorporates several approaches into her classes. She teaches with
gentleness and consistency, and is sensitive to her students' needs. Libbi
is also in private practice as an applicants' attorney in Workers Compensation
Law.
