Poor posture and shallow breathing depletes our vital energy. Come
improve your posture, expand your breathing capacity and experience more energy.
This class will also be helpful for anyone suffering depression.
In this 4-week series,
we will develop a foundation from which to build one’s own asana practice. We
will also investigate how to do yoga in your daily life even when you think you
don’t have time to do an uninterrupted 30-minute self-practice.

Relax completely and let go of stress and tension. Makes a great gift for
you or someone you care about!
The body is pampered as it sinks into gravity in passive yoga postures, allowing
tired muscles a deep rest. The internal organs are refreshed by a slow and
gentle massage as the body opens in some areas and compresses in others. The
mind is calmed in its attunement to the breath, releasing worries and
strivings. Space is limited; please register early.
Mondays,
6:00-8:00 pm, June 2 - June 23, 2008. $65 pre-registered. Please mail check to studio; no phone registrations.
Knitters
face the same muscular-skeletal challenges as people who sit at computers. The
repetitive motion of knitting strains the wrists and fingers, and prolonged
sitting challenges the lower back. Some knitters, especially those fairly new to
knitting, tend to grasp the needles too tightly, creating neck and shoulder
tension. Yoga has been found to be highly effective in improving posture,
relieving back pain, and alleviating symptoms of repetitive motion stress. Yoga
and knitting, therefore, is an excellent combination, as is attested by the
increase in yoga and knitting retreats and vacations. In this class we
will:
· Learn principles of good postural alignment.
· Warm up with stretches at the chair before knitting.
· Knit in congenial companionship for an hour, with reminders from the instructor to be mindful of postural alignment.
· Beginning knitters will receive basic knitting instructions.
· End with a yoga class that focus on stretching and strengthening the wrist, relieving back tension, opening the chest and shoulders, and strengthening postural muscles.
Yoga students new to knitting: $65 for all four weeks, 6/2-6/23. You will learn to cast on, knit, purl, and bind off. With these basic skills, you will learn several stitch patterns. Please bring a pair of #8 or #9 needles, no longer than 10” long, and a skein of worsted weight yarn. No circular needles please.
Experienced Knitters: 4 week commitment not required. Bring your knitting and practice yoga on a drop-in basis of $15, or purchase multiple lessons at a discounted rate. Class cards can be used. No prior yoga experience required.
Ancient Pathways,
www.ancientpathways.net, will provide beginners’ kits for sale at the class, as
well as knitting support during the week. Please check their website for
store hours.
The first day of summer, June 20, is fast approaching. In this four week session, Yoga in Action, we’ll study and practice Surya Namaskar, the Sun Salutation, as well as practice other vinyasa flow sequences. The focus of Iyengar yoga is postural alignment. With the Iyengar eye of precision, we’ll practice the asanas individually, then string the asanas together to perform a dynamic, movement-based practice in which we hit on the main actions of each pose as we flow through them in the vinyasa style. By the end of the 4-week session the student will be familiar with Surya Namaskar to replicate and do on one’s own at home; and she/he will have practiced and familiarized more with the main actions of various asanas.
Wednesdays, 7:15-8:15 pm. By donation.
This sitting group is for people
already familiar with seated meditation since no instructions will be offered.
Elizabeth Karsh has kindly volunteered to coordinate the group.
